Description
Passai or Bassai, the 15th kata. While it is uncertain who the creator of the kata is, it possible that it can be Matsumura Sokon. This kata is actually practiced in various styles of martial arts including Korean martial arts as well. The name Passai translates to "to break a fortress" or something in the lines of "weakening a fortress." The kata contains a series of movement that redirects strikes and counters with an open strike. Passai introduces a move where the body ducks down with two hands blocking upward followed by a strike produced from the blocking hands that move down afterwards. The last movements of the kata are interpreted to be moves representing searching for attackers with limtied vision or in the dark.
